Another disaster in Himalayas

Today, on a bright sunny day, in the morning , we witnessed another climate change-induced disaster in the Indian Himalayas.

Another glacier burst in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district which led to massive flooding and avalanche along the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers. This not only damaged Rishiganga power project but took many lives along the river according to reports.

Previously, it happened in Kedarnath in 2013 when excessive rainfall led to melting of chorabari glacier which triggered the disaster. But that was even bigger disaster that took thousands of lives comparatively.

One disaster took place because of extreme heat and the other because of excessive rainfall. Without a doubt nature is retaliating because of our own karma, Global warming.

The biggest question in front of us is when we are going to wake up and take climate change seriously?

The Himalayan region in our country is least monitored and other issues are given more priority. But we, along with the government ,needs to know that when our environment, our planet is not secure then how can we make our economy secure. When there will be no planet to live then what will be the use of wealth, power or anything else !

The fight against climate change should be our number one priority and efforts should be made to speed up our actions.

There are 100s of lakes forming in the Himalayan region because of melting of glaciers which are shrinking at a fast rate. Many have become time bombs that can burst any moment. Sooner we take this issue seriously better it will be for our generations to come.

We have always admired beauty of nature though we exploited it for our selfish gains. We have already seen a pandemic that exposed our vulnerability and the way we are moving ahead many more vulnerabilities will be exposed.

We have two choices- either speed up our efforts towards tackling global warming right now or wait for the nature to finish us to end it’s misery.

It is completely on us to decide.

I hope it’s not too late for us to do something about.

Saw a documentary by DiCaprio-before the flood…in that they said if we stop all global warming inducing activities right now ..earth will take 80 years to cool down.n we are only increasing it… that’s how drastic the situation is..

I know. That’s why I am afraid that is too late. I hope I am wrong.

It’s very sad, but sadder is that the highest political officials, around the world, do nothing about it.

    • singhpiyush6089 February 7, 2021 / 5:18 pm

Yes, they are culprit but we are equally responsible …we all have to act collectively…

    • singhpiyush6089 February 7, 2021 / 5:22 pm

Sad, bitter truth…but we are hopeful species..we atleast try to do our part individually…

Do you think we need to shutdown all chemical plants (factories) too?!? We just watched the Mark Ruffalo movie (about my hometown area) in West Virginia USA where DuPont poisoned the environment. That couldn’t be good for life on this planet either. ❤️🦋🌀🙏☯️🌅💦🌱🌳

Well our technologies are growing day by day..we are spending a lot on space explorations …why not spend it for saving this planet, spend it on environment friendly tech…. it’s difficult but it’s a race against time

By the way, I learned Holism from my teacher who lived in the Himalayan mountains for many years: Lama Nicholas Packard. ❤️🦋🌀🙏☯️

You are absolutely correct. Mother Earth is trying to tell us something.

    • singhpiyush6089 February 7, 2021 / 6:01 pm

Yes it is…I hope we listen and pay attention to it…

Such a thoughtful post Piyush. If we dont stop and think about solutions right now such tragedy will keep on happening frequently. It time to wake up.

    • singhpiyush6089 February 8, 2021 / 3:00 am

Yes, true…it is now or never..thank you for your precious words…

  9. Navin February 7, 2021 / 9:31 pm

I fully agree….this should be our number 1 priority….instead politicians end up only discussing about it without doing anything….awareness is very much needed….well written, Piyush….

    • singhpiyush6089 February 8, 2021 / 3:02 am

Yes, awareness is must… politicians can only talk what the people want n so we all have to take it collectively…thank you for your precious words…

      • Navin February 8, 2021 / 7:25 am

Absolutely….it’s upto us….but sometimes all politicians do is talking….talk the walk is required….you’re always welcome Piyush….keep expressing sir

      • singhpiyush6089 February 8, 2021 / 7:43 am

Yes, politicians have a big role to play…they messed it up so far …I hope they open their eyes….thank you Navin for your comments…

All this evidence and yet some people continue to deny the presence of climate change. I hope the lost people are found

    • singhpiyush6089 February 8, 2021 / 9:50 am

It’s the most real thing happening on this planet…I hope everyone understands that..

    • singhpiyush6089 February 12, 2021 / 8:00 am

Yeah, it is very unfortunate…I hope people open their eyes..heard one news ..one of the survivors survived because of a tree in which he got stuck..nature still selflessly helping us..

  11. Lebogang Shazzygal Malatji February 12, 2021 / 1:10 pm

    Very much sad
I hope we all pay attention into preventing global warming

    • singhpiyush6089 February 12, 2021 / 1:54 pm

Yes , very unfortunate…we can only do our part n hope others to follow..

  12. Earthpages.org February 16, 2021 / 4:59 pm

There could be additional factors beyond our control too… Earth’s tilt and orbital changes… solar activity… heat emitted from Earth’s core?

    • singhpiyush6089 February 16, 2021 / 5:05 pm

It could be the reason…but scientists here are blaming climate change since many new lakes are forming in Indian Himalayas..also last flood in Kedarnath was triggered by excessive rainfall in 2013..

  13. Benjamin Grossman February 19, 2021 / 6:57 pm

You’re right about the choices. We better figure it out before we don’t get the chance to!

    • singhpiyush6089 February 20, 2021 / 7:10 am

Yes, we have to hurry…thank you for your thoughts Benjamin..
